Paediatrics: Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders

Hypermobility is a common finding in the general population and is used to describe the ability to move joints beyond the normal range of movement. It may be present in just a few joints or many. It is most common in childhood and adolescence and in adult females. In many people joint hypermobility is of no medical consequence and commonly does not give rise to symptoms. But to others it may represent broad deficit ranging from gait abnormalities to digestive and heart problems.

This presentation covers hypermobility from the podiatrists perspective and will look at its various types and presentations. It will also address common clinic findings and cover examinations and treatment options. Most of all it will ensure an introduction to the various hypermobility disorders and seek to augment the participants knowledge base of these disorders.

About our Speaker:

Brandon is a South African trained podiatrist with more than 20 years clinical experience including custom orthotic lab co-ownership and management. With direct interest in clinical pathomechanics (not just biomechanics), Brandon has developed a keen curiosity in the manifestation in the foot and gait, of systemic disease and dysfunction.

Working in a Toronto-based state-of-the-art custom orthotics laboratory, the opportunity to combine clinical, academic and 3DP production ability highlights the various roles each has in podiatry practice. Brandon is currently pursuing a PhD in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
